Due to school closures and social distancing measures issued in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, United Way of Santa Barbara County and its school-based partners are delivering a virtual Fun in the Sun (FITS) program in Summer 2020. Scholars will engage with one another and their program leaders in a unique way, working as part of a virtual team and connecting with their peers daily. Scholars will engage in hands-on STEAM activities, have access to literacy programs Lexia Core 5 and Reading Plus, participate in virtual field trips, and receive all the materials they need for virtual learning on a weekly basis. The goal of Fun in the Sun is to provide a way for our scholars to make meaningful connections with one another, think critically and creatively, and engage with their community.

Fun in the Sun will provide Activity Kits that will contain everything the scholars need to build, create, and learn from home. The kits will include all supplies, a weekly schedule, and individualized literacy lessons. Parents will pick up their FITS Activity Kits on Fridays for the upcoming week at their designated FITS site. To maintain ongoing engagement and motivation, weekly incentives will be given out for accomplishments in literacy, attendance, and other activities. Scholars will log in for 40 minutes a day to meet with their peers and Site Coordinator/Program Leader. Scholars will also receive weekly visits from service delivery partners which will lead a virtual field trips, lessons or activities. Parents will be encouraged to participate with their child or simply support them as they move through the program.

Program Dates: June 29 – August 7, 2020

Schedule:

• FITS Activity Kits will be given out to each family/student every Friday for the following week. The FITS Activity Kits will include a weekly schedule, activity instructions and all the supplies they will need for the week’s activities.
• Scholars will be asked to log in once a day for a 40-minute lesson or discussion.
