Data-Driven Literacy Tutoring for Local K -5th Grade Students
The United Learning Center is a free literacy tutoring program for local Kindergarten through 3rd grade students who are below grade level or approaching grade level in English Language arts. Using the Orton Gillingham approach, students will receive tailored, systematic, and multisensory literacy instruction in small group sessions that build a strong foundation for reading mastery.
Program Details:
- 50-minute group tutoring sessions twice a week after school.
- Free multisensory and systematic, explicit instruction.
- Serving kindergarten - 3rd-grade students who are below grade level or approaching grade level in reading.
- Also serving 4th - 5th-grade students who are below or approaching a 3rd-grade level in reading.
At the United Learning Center, tutors assess every student before creating a customized learning plan. Tutors monitor students' progress, instructing and coaching them along the way. All ULC tutors are trained in the Orton-Gillingham methods of literacy instruction, which can support students with Dyslexia and similar learning differences.
RESULTS
During the pilot phase, the ULC was proven highly effective for all enrolled students. On average, program participants demonstrated an improvement of 2 reading grade levels—a true indicator of the power of in-person learning! Additionally, students improved in the areas of phonological awareness, word decoding, and sight word mastery.
